The Book Thief

I am always interested in books that are made into movies, so when I saw this book on the YA Book List I decided I better read it before I watch it in theaters!

The Book Thief

This New York Times Best Seller deserves all the praise it gets. This book takes place in Nazi Germany and is narrated by the very busy Death. Leisel is described as a foster girl, who just lost her brother, and her interactions with her foster parents and a Jewish man hiding in her basement during WWII.

At her brothers funeral, she takes a book and is taught how to read by her foster dad. Books are significant because the Nazi soldiers are hold book burning ceremonies to try and control the circulating thoughts and ideals. At a book burning ceremony Leisel is spotted stealing another book and is introduced to the mayor’s wife’s library. This is where she “borrows” all the books she reads.

Leisel shares her books with the Jew hiding in her basement where they form a friendship. This book is very sobering, filled with victories, pain reality and tears. The book was amazing but I am unsure if I want to ruin my perceptions by watching the movie. Plus I am unsure if I want to experience the emotional parts again. I am a big cry baby…..

If anyone does watch the movie, please let me know what you think!
